Marley and Me

As you know I was attempting to enjoy a nice walk around the neighborhood this afternoon and a talk with you on the phone when a strange dog came up to me and JUMPED on me. This is the second time I have been jumped on by dogs in the last month and the third time I have been followed by a dog. The result was annoyance and I admit a bit of nervousness. As you probably could tell, my first reaction was actually fear. There is something about an animal or person who will violate your physical boundaries and has the ability to hurt you that results in fear. It's a vulnerable feeling. Fortunatey, he only jumped on me once. But, as you know, he kept following me around the neighborhood and that just annoyed me. I was still insulted that he had the nerve to jump on me and violate my physical boundaries. As I kept walking and he followed me, I got the point he was not such a bad dog afterall. I felt bad for him when the two dalmations barked at him. I wanted to help him get back home, but I didn't know which home was his and I wasn't about to stick my hand by his mouth to check his collar. I know that would probably sound lame to many people. I wasn't ashamed of my fear. In fact, I was hoping I might run into my neighbor with the dog so HE could check his collar. He probably wouldn't be afraid, being a dog person and all. As I walked closer to home, I didn't like the idea of just abandoning him. How would he get home? What if he ran in front of a car? What if his owner didn't get back until dark? I thought maybe I could just try checking his collar. So, I commanded the dog to sit. He immediately listened. Good boy! He won me over then. So obedient. Not a bad dog afterall. I was able to dial the number on the collar and see that his name is Marley. Knowing his name made me even more attached. I called the number and explained that their dog had followed me around the neighborhood and was on --- St. I explained that I would stay with the dog for a few minutes but that I had to get back home. (I thought I had someone in labor; actually I might. Time will tell). Then, I also texted the number that their dog was on our street. I stayed with Marley for a few minutes and then walked home with him following behind. I didn't let him in, but was happy when he stayed at the doorway. He would be safe there. About 15 minutes later the owner texted back that she was heading over this way. I looked and Marley was not there anymore (didn't think he would stick around that long). Got a text a few minutes later that she found him. I was so glad to know! God reminded me through this silly incident that compassion is stronger than fear. I have seen that so many times in my life where I might be afraid of this or that, but compassion or love for another compels me to take action. I love how God speaks to us during our everyday situations. One minute I was highly annoyed with this beast who had the nerve to bother me. Ten minutes later he was my friend. Plus, it felt really good for compassion to rule over rejection. Figured you'd like the story all the more as you were on the phone with me most of the time he followed me. Hoping I might run into him again sometime, just that he will stay home:)

Zambia

Last night I reviewed the CDC and CIA websites in hopes of preparations for my upcoming trip. So, here is what I learned. Zambia is a landlocked country in the southern region of Africa a little larger than the size of Texas. It is a republic with an economic incline though poverty remains a severe issue from what I have read. The capitol is called Lusaka, which I believe is centrally located. The terrain in the southern region is hills and mountains. The climate is tropical with both dry and rainy seasons. God willing, I will be there just as dry season is finishing up which I prefer to the rainy season, hopeful to avoid malaria and dengue fever. Christianity is the primary religion with Muslim next. I am aware of the challenge of witch doctors in the area. English is the primary language though there are many tribal languages. I have a feeling there are not many English speakers amongst the locals where we will be but the camp is an operation of English speaking folks. The base is in Livingstone not too far from the famous, Victoria Falls, which I hope to visit. We will be living in tents and there is a base house somewhat near with running water and electricity (I think I remember her saying that). Maternal morbidity is 25 in the world with 4401 deaths out of 100,000 births. Infant morbidity is 19 in the world with 69+ out of 1000 births. The life expectancy is ~ 51 years old. Zambia is 10 in the world for HIV. Risk of major infectious disease is very high with diarrhea, typhoid, malaria, dengue fever, schiosomiasis, and rabies accounting for the illnesses. I imagine the high HIV rates contribute to the high risk of infection as the result is a compromised immune system. Pregnancy has the same effect on the immune system. I was told by the CDC to avoid "bushmeat" aka monkeys, bats, and dogs. I would like to say "don't worry" but since we plan to go into the bush (which I am excited about) who knows? I consider Julie a local by now and being the health care worker, I will trust her judgement... and God's provision. The camp will provide safe drinking water. Still, I have kefir every morning so hopefully my gut will be protected. I plan to bring Vit C packs in case I do get sick to help with dehydration and to strengthen my immune system. There is still a lot I do not know about what to expect both culturally and practically. But, that is part of the fun.

Worthy

He is worthy to wait upon, to be denied for. He is worthy to ridiculed for, to be shunned, rejected, rebuked, refused, misunderstood. His ways are holy and pure and right and true and good. Forever. Always. Holy. Worthy.
Enter into His presence and you will see clearly that it is NOT loss or shame to be set apart. He is worthy. He is pleased. These are acts of worship- a fragrant offering, a pleasing sacrifice. He is WORTHY. Many will know Him because of these things. Be faithful. Stay in step. It doesn't have to seem important or make sense. He knows what He has in mind. The result is to His glory. Offer these trials as an offering, fragrant and pleasing to the Lord. He will fulfill that which He has purposed. It will naturally result from the connected-to-the-Vine living way of life. You will fall- get up and return to the Lord. He is greater and will sustain you (plural).
May the Hand of God prevail now and always in my heart and throughout the land. Amen.

Ain't No Mo'

Yes, I have been on bloggie overload this month. The purpose of this post is to apologize for the obliteration of your tennis shoes. I figured maybe if I told a good enough story it might make up for the fact that you no longer have tennis shoes. Though there is always superglue and I should think of you of all people would appreciate superglue... mmm hmmm... teeth. Anyway, it's not that great of a story really. But, here is how it went down. It was too much of a scorcher out to go on a run since I would be walking down to the market in the afternoon with Susan and Holden. So, I had the brilliant idea to walk down to the tennis courts and hit on the wall. It would be perfect. Not too much time and good to hit some balls. No tennis shoes on me? Not a problem! Annie has some and she let me borrow hers last time. I can just wear those. They looked like they had seen better days, but I was going for practicality not style. As I walked down to the courts I saw two men on the court with the wall. The other court was empty. So, I walked up with my racket and can of fresh balls and asked if it would be okay if I hit on the wall. Sure. They moved to the next court. As you may know, you have to be a pro to hit on the wall per surface area. It took me a few hits to get going. I hit some good balls with a few good rallies. Then, it happened. Your shoe came apart. It was over. Bye bye shoe... ain't no mo'. I have no idea if either of them saw this. I almost said something. But, why? I just took off both shoes and walked back home. Shortest tennis session ever. So, I sincerely apologize for the unraveling of your shoe. You are welcome to use mine whenever you need to. Look at it this way. Really, I did you a favor. Yep, I saved you from embarrassment or worse- defeat. Just think, it could have been you hitting on the wall or even playing a match. Well, I am feeling much better about this whole thing. But, still, je suis tres desole.

Chocolat

Wednesday at work I REALLY wanted/needed some chocolate. How does this happen? I had an amazing lunch. It was well balanced, healthy, delicious, plenty. Yet, somehow, an hour later I was just about to bust without chocolate. The receptionist ended up offering me some. Ghiradelli dark chocolate truffle. Oh man, did it hit the spot. It really was just what I needed. The next day I decided to tell her how much I had needed it and appreciated her sharing. So, I told her how I was sitting at my desk and I didn't just want chocolate. Everything in my entire being NEEDED it. I couldn't remember if I prayed for some or just hoped someone would bring me some (it happens sometimes). So, I had just walked out to the front desk and stood there. I didn't say anything. I wasn't pouting or anything. I just stood there. She had no idea. Next thing I knew she mentioned needing a treat. My eyes lit up and I said, "me too!" She said "do you want any chocolate?" My face lit up and with wide eyes I said, "YES!!!" The thing that amazes me about the whole story is that every woman I have told the story to (ok only 3) all knew exactly what I was talking about. I figured they would think I was being dramatic. But, the all knew. Crazy, huh??

Leslie's Wedding

Every day I was in California I woke up an hour later. So, the first day it was 4:30. The second day, 5:30. Friday 6:30. Saturday 7:30. Needless, to say, I was tired. So, I really just needed to get to Santa Barbara. I was off to a later start than planned anyway Saturday morning. All dressed up with a plan to hit In and Out for a burger on the way so I could fit that in since it was on my make believe list. As you know, that didn't happen due to traffic. As I have already said, Santa Barbara is GORGEOUS and the wedding was beautiful. I was so glad I went:). Enjoy the pics!
And, I told her you said "Congratulations!"

Laguna

Beautiful Laguna...
Oh, I did get to drive PCH (Pacific Coastal Highway) while I was in Laguna. That was fun. My radio station wasn't working at the time, but I found an oldies station I was enjoying. I had planned to drive the PCH to Santa Barbara on Saturday, but decided against it. So, I am really glad I got to experience at least a small portion of it. I did turn around on a street that reminded me of being in the islands. It was a super steep hill. So fun!

Holla!!

Okay, so have I told you about my experience at the adorable french Cafe in San Diego? It is called Cafe 21.
I had already walked up and down 5th St. I moved my car to a 2h parking area to have more time to enjoy the scenery. It was a gorgeous day and a bit cool out. I was actually wearing my bathing suit with a cover up dress and my yellow hoodie. It's a bit short for a dress, I guess, but perfect for a cover up. Super comfy. I remember thinking if I ever came back to San Diego it would be fun to go to one of the restaurants. Plus, the food looked AMAZING. I had packed a lunch. I had already eaten the other half of my Trader Joe's salad from the day before with plans to eat an orange and other snacks I had packed in a little bit. Then, I decided to just stop at the cafe and order something. I could get some water, sit down and journal, and use the restroom while I was at it. So, I was looking at a menu outside when the waiter came up. He might have been gay? Or maybe just french;) His greeting: "Holla!!!" Ha! I will have to impersonate him when I see you next week:) "Well, don't strangle your neck, take a look at that menu." Me: Smile. "I already know I want to eat here. May I sit outside?" Sure! I decided to order a crepe even though it was $11. It sounded amazing and I figured I would splurge since I was on vacation. I couldn't decide between the spinach and the turkey. I really wanted meat. I asked the waitress (also french) who offered to put spinach in my turkey crepe. Thanks! Fresh turkey, fresh pineapple, fresh mozerella, fresh spinach, topped with powdered sugar. And, to my surprise, THIS is what was presented to me...
Not one, but THREE, delicous crepes. I ate two out of three. When she asked how it was, I answered: Amazing!! If you are ever in San Diego, you absolutely must go there. Cafe 21 on 5th Street! It was a lovely afternoon. If I had more time I would have hit Balboa Park on my way out. Really, I think you need the whole day for that. Might be expensive anyway. Enjoy a few more pics of San Diego. I was learning the camera, so I do apologize....
I bought some souvenir chocolates from the Ghiradelli store. So much fun picking through so many different flavors.
